A man was discovered dead while in custody at the Dededo Precinct over the weekend and now GPD is investigating the incident.

The 49-year-old male arrestee was being held at the Dededo Precinct following his arrest last Friday on charges related to first and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

According to GPD Spokesman Sgt Paul Tapao, the man was discovered by officers in the holding cell — dead.

“He was unresponsive. Immediate care was provided to the male individual and he was transported to Guam Regional Medical City for advanced treatment and care. The Guam Police Department was made aware that on July 4th, the male individual was pronounced deceased by attending physicians,” Tapao said.

Moving forward, the Guam Police Department has launched a criminal investigation as well as an internal affairs investigation into the incident.

“The administrative investigation is just to see if the officers were in line with the general orders GPD SOP that may exist within the precinct or any unit directives that was developed relative to the precinct in itself,” Tapao said.

He added that each precinct has different unit directives pertaining to precinct operations but each precinct is governed by general orders in dealing with people in custody.

The investigation into the arrestee’s death is ongoing.
