Marines will conduct urban training exercise on Guam beginning Wednesday January 6 through January 16.
Guam – The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit or MEU will be conducting a live fire Realistic Urban Training Exercise or RUTEX on Guam beginning this week from January 6th through the 16th.
The exercises will happen at the South Finegayan housing area and near the Tanguisson power plant in Dededo. Marine Corps Activity Guam officially made the announcement Tuesday however the announcement was preceded by an open letter to the community of Guam explaining the need for the training that was sent out last week by the officer in charge of expeditionary operations training group III marine expeditionary force Col. Daniel H. Wilson.
In that letter he explained the need for marines to train in an urban environment. According to the official release the purpose of RUTEX is to train the 31st MEU’s marines to coordinate with local law enforcement agencies and civic leaders to operate in an urban environment and hone their proficiency to respond to threats to a community or it’s infrastructure. Residents “could see marines periodically throughout the exercise and are likely to notice increased military activities operating in this area on the 13th and 15th of January.” Planners of this exercise have been working with GovGuam since August to “ensure safety” and “minimize the impact on the community”
