Guam- While they targeted June 11 as the official opening date, the Mayors’ Council of Guam is preparing for a soft opening of the 2011 Liberation Carnival this Wednesday.
Executive Director Angel Sablan says they are ahead of schedule because they started the bids and everything else early. Throughout Monday, inspectors also filled the carnival grounds at the Paseo De Susana to review the food vendor line up and fire safety protocol. With casino gambling and nightly entertainment planned at the carnival, Sablan says this year’s festivities will be different than previous years.
“We’re looking at a soft opening on Wednesday. It looks like a go” said Sablan. “My only concern is the rides. Mr. Thompson told me his generators won’t be here until Thursday, so we’re trying to see whether we can make up for that and have him rent some generators for at least a couple days until his generators get here.”
The carnival ties into the 67th anniversary celebration of Guam’s liberation from Japanese forces during World War II.
