More of the Guam Department of Education students who have not reported to GDOE this school year have been located by village mayors.

During a meeting with the Guam Education Board on Wednesday, Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares says some mayors took the initiative to go out and hand-deliver the school hard-copy packets to the absent students.

“By doing that, several of us actually found families who not only moved away not just from the village but actually moved off-island and so we communicated that information with the several schools we are assisting with and we all continue to support the schools when it comes time to locate students’ families,” Savares said.

According to GDOE spokesperson Isa Baza, there are a total of 550 students still unaccounted for. Given the amount of days these students have missed school, truancy notices are bound to be given but with the current circumstances, how strict GDOE will be in enforcing these truancy protocols is still being determined.
