Medical City: Phase I of $70K Art Competition Completed

Guam – The first round of evaluations have concluded determining which artists or art teams will proceed to the second phase of the Guam Regional Medical City Art  Competition.

Artists from Guam and the region were invited to submit applications and portfolios of their works to a panel of judges that included hospital representatives and art experts from the community. The artists are competing for a $70,000 commission to produce signature Work of art that will grace the lobby ofthe new private hospital that is scheduled to open in mid 2014.

Fifty six applications from individuals and teams were submitted in the Íirst of a three-phased selection process. “We are very pleased with the interest from the art community in Guam and the region.” said Margaret Bengzon, CEO of the GRMC.l “Our panel of judges were certainly overwhelmed with the depth and creativity ofthe artists who submitted.”

The applications received included professional, amateur and group submissions. Of the lifty-six submittals 37 were selected to go on to the next phase. The selection criteria of this phase included a review of the artist’s technical capability and experience in producing commissioned Works of art of similar scope and/or size. Considerations also included a review of the artist’s training, education and/or experience as demonstrated through their portfolios and applications.

The selected artists will now be invited to submit for Phase II of the selection process that will include the submission of their proposed concepts for the commissioned Work. In this phase, the selected artists will be judged on their creativity in expressing the mission statement of the GRMC which is “Where Patients are Partners”. Submissions will include a Written narrative of their Concepts and each artist will be individually interviewed by the selection committee to determine who will proceed onto the next phase from which a final selection will be made.  

About the Guam Regional Medical City:
