VIDEO: Memorial Service Held in Texas for Guam Born Pfc. Mariano Raymundo, Killed in Afghanistan


Guam- A memorial service for 21 year old Private First Class Mariano Martin Raymundo was held in Houston, Texas Wednesday.

The fallen Guam-born soldier was killed in Sharan, Afghanistan on June 1. Raymundo’s first cousin, Laura Santos, tells PNC his body arrived on Monday in Texas and he was greeted by family, friends, service members and the rest of the community. During the day of his funeral, Raymundo’s casket was transported on a horse and carriage.

Pictures provided by the family show last respects being paid during a chapel service followed by military honors at the Houston National Cemetery. The fallen hero’s body was cremated Thursday. His ashes will be brought back Guam where he was born for burial. It was Raymundo’s final wish that his ashes be returned to the place he called home. 

Raymundo was born on Guam on November 17, 1991 and left when he was 3 years old. He joined the Army in November 2011 and was based out Ft. Drum, New York. He deployed with his unit in January of this year. No date has been set on when his ashes will arrive on island.
