Merizo Mural Unveiling at 5 pm TODAY

Guam – The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) along with the Merizo Mayors office will take the wraps off  the “We Are Guam, We Are Merizo” village mural on TODAY at 5 pm at the Merizo Pier Park. The ceremony will mark the 15th mural completed under the “We Are Guam” Village Mural Project.

Merizo’s artwork offers a coastal view of the southern village, as well as illustrations of water activities, historical landmarks and life of residents.

“It’s a welcome addition and another opportunity for not only our villagers but our visitors to share our southern pride,” said Merizo Mayor Ernest Chargualaf, who also invited islanders to the Merizo Crab Festival this weekend. “There will be food, fun and entertainment.”

The mural, designed by local artist and Merizo resident Victoria Sayrs celebrates the beauty of mountain vistas and the colors of the ocean that made her fall in love with the south.

“I wanted to depict what attracted me to Merizo through the art,” Sayrs said. During the planning phase, Sayrs also worked with the Merizo Mayor’s office and community volunteers to coordinate completion of the mural.

“The village murals are a great way to encourage curiosity among our youth to learn more about the uniqueness of their villages,” said GVB Deputy Director Joann Camacho. “We look forward to more and more of these being completed across our island. They are a beautiful addition to the island’s beautiful scenery.”

All paints and supplies have been generously donated by Benson Hardware and the Mikel I.V. Tan Foundation. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to contact their mayors to volunteer for their village mural projects.
