Last night, seven contestants competed for the title of Miss Universe Guam 2019. Today, Guam has a new queen.
Ms. Sissie Luo was crowned Miss Universe Guam 2019 on Aug. 29 Thursday, at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort.
She tells PNC today that winning the pageant still feels unreal but she is excited to represent the island.
The 18-year-old is from the village of Tamuning. She also took home the award of best in evening gown, best in swimsuit, and miss photogenic. Luo shares how she felt during the final question and answer portion.
“There were so many thoughts in my head I was just trying to collect myself and so the way I answered it was to emphasize the point that the hospitality and the compassion of the people of our island are never gonna leave. It’s always going to be here because its something so unique about our island, its always going to be a thing here,” she said.
Luo says she was born and raised in Guam, and is of Chinese descent. Her first spoken language was Mandarin. She is a recent graduate from St. John’s high school. Luo encourages girls on Guam to go after their dreams of pursuing a pageant.
“Just do it! Everyone has their insecurities. Everyone is feeling unsure of themselves but it’s an experience that you will never forget even if you don’t win the crown. I don’t think there’s anything you would regret cause its such a great learning experience and growth experience,” she said.
Luo will be representing Guam on the international stage at the Miss Universe pageant in the coming months.
