Some members of the Guam National Guard have been assigned a new mission, but they won’t have to travel far.

On Wednesday, the National Guard held a send-off ceremony for the soldiers selected to guard the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system at the Northwest Field on Andersen Air Force Base.

Guam Guard Adjutant General Esther Aguigui addressed the soldiers and told them that the mission may seem thankless as they spend their early mornings sitting in the tower and scanning the darkness, but that by doing so, they would be protecting their home.

“In a remote field in a remote corner of our island…when our freedom is in jeopardy, you will always do your duty no matter what the price is. And because you are out on the frontlines, we can all sleep at peace at night. You will be there guarding the land we love,”  Aguigui said.

Aguigui thanked the families of the deployed guard personnel for the sacrifices they would have to make to adjust to the deployment.
