The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense brought the community together for the grand finale to National Preparedness Month.

The free event was held at the Agana Shopping Center last Saturday. This year’s NPM focused on planning, with the overarching theme of “Prepared, Not Scared.”

GHS/OCD Public Information Officer Jenna Gaminde Blas says the finale was their largest event promoting Guam’s emergency management capabilities.

They included partners from the military, federal and local government, as well as private and non-profit organizations to conduct indoor and outdoor demonstrations, giveaways, static displays and other activities.

Blas also recommends simple tips that are useful in preparing for emergency situations.

“So some simple tips that we promote for preparedness are building an emergency preparedness kit, making sure you have non-perishable food items, water, first aid kit, flashlights, all of those in an easily accessible container, something you can take with you if you had to evacuate, and also building your family communication play and practicing your plan with each other,” Blas said.

Blas adds they also gave away emergency preparedness kits and other prizes at the finale event. For more on staying prepared for emergencies, go to ghs.guam.gov.
