SANTA RITA, Guam (Feb. 15, 2014) – The U.S. Navy, in partnership with other federal and local agencies, has stood up a unified command structure to assess and mitigate potential environmental impacts due to the grounding of the Japanese commercial fishing vessel Daiki Maru in outer Apra Harbor Feb. 13.
Navy officials are taking all the necessary steps to address the situation and ensure the protection of the environment. The unified command set the top priority on assessing, planning for, and removing hazardous materials from the vessel to mitigate damage to the environment. Mitigation efforts to clean up debris on the beach began at 8:30 a.m. with removal of heavy oils from the vessel planned for 2 p.m.
The unified command consists of representatives from Naval Base Guam, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam, Guam Environmental Protection Agency, and the responsible party. Other agencies that have been involved in all aspects of planning from the standup include Joint Region Marianas Operations, Naval Facilities Command Environmental personnel, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Guam Fish and Wildlife Service, Cabras Marine and Osroco.
“A unified command allows all parties who have an interest in the event to collaborate and agree what the responsibilities are and what outcomes are desired” said Dennis Siler, Naval Base Guam Operations Manager “The unified command is key to a successful outcome.”
