North Korea issues new Guam threat ahead of Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercises

“Neither Guam nor Hawaii nor the U.S. mainland can dodge the merciless strike of the strategic force of the Korean People’s army.”

Guam – North Korea has issued another warning for the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam.

According to a report out of the Rodong Sinmun a North Korean state run newspaper “The DPRK is the strongest possessor of ICBM capable of striking the U.S. mainland from anywhere and anytime as it pleases. Neither Guam nor Hawaii nor the U.S. mainland can dodge the merciless strike of the strategic force of the Korean People’s army. The KPA is keeping a high alert, fully ready to contain the enemies. It will take resolute steps the moment even a slight sign of the “preventive war” is spotted. The U.S. has to be responsible for the ensuing disasters.” This latest threat was issued yesterday. Annual joint exercises with South Korea and the U.S. known as the Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercises are set to begin on the Korean Peninsula today.

The Guam Office of Homeland Security issued a release stating that the threat level for Guam remains unchanged.

No Change in Threat Level from Recent North Korea Events
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), our federal and military partners, continue to monitor the recent events surrounding North Korea.

“As of this morning, there is no change in threat level and Guam remains in normal conditions,” stated George Charfauros, Homeland Security Advisor. “We continue to place high confidence in the U.S. Department of Defense capabilities to protect the U.S., its territories and allies. We will continue communication with our federal and military partners. Our office has not received official statement warranting any concern for imminent threat to Guam or the Marianas.”

In a recent editorial for North Korea’s newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, North Korea criticized the annual South Korea, United States and partner allies’ military exercise, Ulchi Freedom Guardian, which begins today. The rhetoric out of North Korea regarding the exercise is similar to what they have done in the past and continue to do with each joint exercise between South Korea, the United States and its allies.
