October 2022 is proclaimed as STARBASE month, in recognition of DoD STARBASE Guam
The proclamation was given to recognize DoD STARBASE Guam as the best Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program in the island by establishing October as STARBASE month.
The program started in October of last year and serves 5th-grade students that are underrepresented in STEM disciplines.
In the hopes of producing interest in the students in joining the future STEM workforce, the Starbase program gives participants the opportunity to learn about these disciplines hands-on year-round.
Lieutenant Governor Josh Tenorio said, “What the Governor and I had intended was really trying to empower and make possible so many programs that are going to give opportunities for young people, and our students to tap into that talent. To tap on to their natural inclination in the areas of Science, Technology and engineering, the arts and mathematics”
Tenorio added, “This is really what the future holds for us”
Since last year, the program has served over 1,417 students from different schools island-wide and will continue to do so to raise interest in these rising careers and continue to build the local STEM workforce.
