Last night in IIAAG GHS Basketball action, the Okkodo Bulldogs, coming off their big overtime win over the Guam High Panthers on Saturday night, handed the AOL Cougars their 1st loss of the season with a 47-43 victory at their home gymnasium in Dededo

Academy had just strung off 5 straight victories and this was to be their toughest opponent yet. It was an off night for most of the other teams and in attendance were the coaches for the Panthers and the Warriors. And many of their players as they knew this game would be a good indicator of where these two strong teams stood in the league.

The Cougars off to a fast start took a 7-0 lead just 3 minutes into the 1st Qtr.  Reigning MVP Mia SanNicolas carried the Cougars as they took full control in the 1st half, scoring 19pts and hitting 3 out of 4 free throws.  The Cougars would lead by seven at the halfway mark 26-19.

The lead continued to grow as Academy went up by as much as 14pts in the 3rd Qtr. But Okkodo would get it down to eight 36-28 at the end of the 3rd period.  And then the tide turned as Okkodo’s Guards Venezza Gustilo and Racquel Camacho would turn it on in the 4th Qtr scoring a combined 15 pts to SanNicolas’ seven.  And that proved to be the difference.

Exhaustion may have been a factor for SanNicolas as she would hit just 4 out 12 shots at the charity line in the 2nd half.  She ended the night with a game-high 33pts and 13 rebounds.  Including 5 block shots.  Okkodo’s Camacho led her team with 14pts. Nine of them coming from trifectas.  Teammate Gustilo ended the night with 13.

“I couldn’t have done it without my team,”  Said Okkodo shooting guard Camacho.  “My job is to shoot so that’s what I do.”  “Academy played really good.”  “They gave us a good challenge.”  “But we came back because it’s all about the teamwork.”  “Mia S.N. she’s pretty tall.”  “We just had to stop her from scoring and that’s really it.”

The Cougars will now face the league-leading defending champions, the St Paul Warriors, tonight in a showdown at St. Paul’s Gymnasium.
