Guam – They’ve done Guam proud again! This weekend, for the second year in a row, the GCC CTE Lodging Management Team from Okkodo High School has finished second in the annual American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute National Lodging Management Program (LMP) Competition in Orlando, Florida.
Captain Flori Dela Cruz, Ranalou Sison, Royelle Carter, and Christian Lubas, coached by Okkodo LMP instructor Evon Wong, placed first in the Knowledge Bowl section of the competition, and were edged out of the championship by the slimmest of margins by the team from California.
“Guam’s tourism experts should take note of these names,” said Norman Aguilar, GCC Tourism & Hospitality Department Chair. “They are future stars in our industry.”
“Over the last five years our Guam teams have set the standard placing 3rd, 4th, 1st, 2nd and 2nd in this competition,” noted Barry Mead, Guam CTE Programs State Director. “Our LMP program with just under 300 students total competes every year against states with 10 times that many enrolled in this program. We are proud of our students and proud of our faculty for what they accomplish every year!” Mead said.
The Okkodo LMP team two years ago won the national competition, and last year again took second place by a very slim margin.
The Lodging Management Program is a national educational program for high school juniors and seniors that highlights hospitality and tourism management, front office and housekeeping management, leadership skills, marketing and sales, and food and beverage service. On Guam, nearly 350 high school students are enrolled in GCC’s HTMP programs in the public high schools this academic year. Through internships arranged as part of their LMP class, students can explore the variety of job opportunities open to them in the hotel industry. These programs are also designed to feed directly into GCC’s postsecondary Tourism & Hospitality programs.
Organized by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation, the national competition challenges participants with events based on real-world job scenarios, and provides opportunities for students and instructors alike to network with representatives from colleges, hotels, and hospitality associations.
