Guam – On Sunday the group Our Islands Are Sacred held a gathering in response to growing militarization in the Mariana islands.

Our islands are sacred member Moneka De Oro says that people on Guam Tinian Saipan and Pagan held a simultaneous gathering on their respective islands on Sunday to pray and think about how to address impacts from militarization. Currently the military has plans to increase it’s presence in the Marianas via the movement of 5,000 marines from Okinawa to Guam as well as plans to create training ranges on islands of Tinian and Pagan. “A joining of our people to come together and pray and think about ways to move forward in light of all of the militarization that’s happening throughout the islands,” said De Oro.

The gathering was held at the Angel Santos memorial latte stone park in Hagatna.
