Over 12,000 people attend BBQ Block Party in Tumon

Normally, on the Fourth of July, island residents would gather on the beach and at parks to barbecue.

Meskla took home the overall 2017 Champion Grill Master award.

Guam – Over 12,000 people filled GVB’s annual barbecue block party in Pleasure Island Tumon on Saturday.

Team Meskla, led by Chef Peter Duenas, won the coveted overall 2017 champion grill master award but Meskla didn’t stop there. The team took first place in all three categories of chicken, beef and pork. For the chicken category, the second-place award went to team

For the chicken category, the second-place award went to team Dokgnos and Asu Smokehouse took third.  The second-place pork griller was Guam Barbeque Company followed by Dusit Smiles in third. For the beef category, team Dokgnos took second followed by Asu Smokehouse.  Domingo Ocampo was named the winner of the second annual Hot Diggety Dog hot dog eating contest after he devoured seven 10-inch Nathan hot dogs in 5 minutes. The Micronesian Chef’s Association teamed up with GVB to award over $4,000 dollars in prize money to competition winners.

“About six years ago I approached the Guam Visitors Bureau and I said Guam, barbecue, they’re synonymous with each other. We need to do this so we did it and every single year for the last five years we had a phenomenal success because of you,” said Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio at the crowded event.

This year the BBQ block party even offered food trucks from the Guam Street Grinds and Finds group.
