The Palau Ministry of Education has extended school closures until May 15, 2020, which is the end of the current school year.
The decision was made with the increasing threat of the global COVID-19 crisis in mind, according to the directive from the Ministry, and following the recommendation of Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr., the Ministry of Health, and the National Emergency Committee.
Palau Minister of Education Sinton Soalablai signed the directive.
While schools remain closed, student lessons and online learning activities will be provided to the students.
“This preventive measure comes with the utmost concern for the health and safety of all public and private school students, teachers, and school staff, along with all other personnel of the Ministry of Education. This measure will help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 in the community through mass gathering and lack of appropriate social distancing should the schools were to reopen and operate as usual,” the directive read.
