Guam- The Pohnpei State soccer team arrives in Guam today and will be playing several friendly matches against local teams during their stay.
On island until October 7, the Pohnpeian team is on their first overseas trip in a decade. The soccer program was relaunched in July of last year and the team has been training for over six months.
The purpose of the trip will be to gauge the team’s progress, with matches against several local club teams leading up to a match against a team made up of a combination of men’s and Under-18 national team players on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The trip is also preparation for the upcoming 2011 FSM Games, where they will play fellow states Yap and Chuuk – who have also restarted their soccer programs. The best players from that tournament will be chosen to represent FSM internationally.
The Pohnpeian team has a strong connection to the United Kingdom – thanks to English coaches Paul Watson and Matthew Conrad. The team is also indebted to Coyne Airways – the leading UK cargo airline – who are funding the trip as official sponsors.
In addition, after receiving strong support upon their departure from their home island, the Pohnpeian team hopes to see the same from the large Micronesian community on Guam. Fans are encouraged to come out and watch the matches and cheer on the Pohnpei players. They also want to mention that any assistance in feeding the squad is a plus!
