Police investigating sudden death of prisoner at Hagatna Lockup

The individual was sharing a cell with two other prisoners.

Guam – A death investigation is underway at the Hagatna Lockup after a 33-year-old detainee was discovered in his cell this morning unresponsive.

According to Department of Corrections Director Tony Lamorena, corrections officers discovered the male detainee in his cell unresponsive.

“The officers came in and [found him] non-responsive so they immediately called Dr. [Larry] Lizama who was at our clinic here in Hagatna at the time and they immediately called the fire department as well,” said Lamorena on News Talk K57 with host Patti Arroyo. “Our medical doctor, Dr. Lizama, was on site at the clinic and he immediately rushed to his bed side but obviously the individual had expired.”

Lamorena says the Guam Police Department was also called out to the scene.

“Right now GPD is still in the crime scene,” he noted, adding that the case will be treated as criminal in nature pending a death investigation.

Lamorena said the individual was sharing the cell with two other detainees, both of whom were interviewed by police. Lamorena adds that the detainee had been incarcerated since early December.

Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola says he will be performing the autopsy next Wednesday, however, he indicated that based on his initial observation, the detainee appeared to have died from natural causes.
