Last week, President Joe Biden signed an executive order in response to the overturning of Roe V. Wade that will protect the reproductive rights of women.

The executive order includes protection of their rights to access abortion, including medication abortion, access to contraception, the right to emergency medical care under the law, providers and the clinics women rely on, protection of women’s privacy and sensitive health information, and access to accurate medical information.
Regarding the overturning, President Biden has stated these are the types of laws that not only put women’s lives at risk but are the laws that will cause life. He added that what we are witnessing is a giant step backward in much of our country.
Currently, the ban is in effect in 13 states; 12 additional states are likely to ban the choice in the coming week, said President Biden. Some of these states have also raised the threat of criminal penalties for doctors and health care providers. President Bide n added that some extreme states don’t allow exceptions for rape or incest victims.
During President Joe Biden’s remarks, he mentioned a case of a 10-year-old rape victim who had to travel to Indiana to terminate the pregnancy.
President Joe Biden stated, “10 years old..10 years old, raped, six weeks pregnant, already traumatized, is forced to travel to another state, imagine being that little girl, just imagine being that little girl, ten years old! Does anyone believe that the highest majority of you that that should be not be able to be dealt with, or any other state in the nation, a 10-year-old girl should be forced to give birth to a rapist’s child.”
President Biden has asked the Justice Department to do everything in their power to protect clinics in certain states that are open from intimidation to protect the rights of women to travel to other states where that care is available, and to protect women’s rights to FDA-approved medication.
The affordable care act guarantees insurance coverage for women’s health services, including free birth control.
President Joe Biden stated, “The executive order directs hss to identify ways to expand access to reproductive health services like IUD’s, birth control pills, emergency contraception and equally important this executive order protects patient privacy and access to information.”
During his remarks, President Bide spoke briefly of a future where Republicans in Congress would feel the need to pass a national ban on abortion because of the overturning and added that the only way to fulfill and restore the rights for women in this country is by voting.
