Guam – Sam Lai and his partner Yuka Iwata chipped and charged to upset No. 2 ranked Ryan Horn and Diane Lee, 6-3, 7-6(6) for a spot in the finals of the Mixed 35+ doubles in 2012 Quality Cup tennis action Saturday at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa tennis courts.
Lai and Iwata will face No. 1 seeds, Wendell and Jocelyn Roden, in the final. The Roden duo defeated Ricardo Estella and Margaret Terry 6-4, 6-4 for the finals berth.

In other matches, Brian Pak and Rosalie Cao cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Robert Mendi and Charlayne Espinosa and will next play No. 1 seeds, Wendell Roden and Vivian Lee in the Mixed Open semifinals. On the bottom half of the draw, Estella and Anita Feria advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Anthony John and Camdyn Nadler. Estella and Feria will next face junior champions Emil Christian Penafiel and Chloe Gadsden Sunday.
Joshua Cepeda and Julie Bollinger move into the semifinals of the Mixed 4.0 doubles after No. 1 seeds Benson Au Yeung and April Flores defaulted. Cepeda and Bollinger will play Mendi and Espinosa, 6-3, 7-5 winners over Dale Kim and Liza Provido. No. 3 Sam Lai, 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 winners over Masakazu Takahashi and Iwata, will take on David Lai and Lydia Tan, 6-3, 6-4 winners over Darryl Navarro and Margaret Terry, in the other semifinal.
In Mixed 45+ doubles action, No. 2 Craig Tsuda and Migu Goodman defeated Jeff Bristol and Julie Bollinger, 6-1, 6-3 to face Tera Tapu and Rosalie Cao in the finals Sunday.
Mixed 3.0 doubles No. 1 seeds Edward Chung and Ashley Nadler played a 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 nail-biter against Sidney Gadsden and Caroline Lloynd to earn a semifinal berth against Brian Tuncap and Jean Cepeda. No. 2 You Young Cho and Hae Min Song, 6-2, 7-5 winners over Calvin Gaston and Shina Yasukawa will play Ryan and Terrie Freeman in the other semifinal. The Freeman tandem beat Min Tae Kim and Christina Song, 6-7, 6-2, 10-4.
No. 1 Victor Tuncap and Yasukawa beat Patrick Cayetano and Diane Sardon 6-1, 6-0 to earn a semifinal match against Daniel Lee and Song, 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 victors over Camden Camacho and Hyun Joo Suh in Mixed 2.0 doubles. Imho Choo and Noriko Choo will play No. 2 Erwin Soto and Emmanuelle Haurillon in the other semifinal. The Choo duo upset No. 4 Min Tae Kim and Eliana Yu, 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. Soto/Haurillon beat Kristopher Harper and Collette Palomo, 6-7, 6-2, 10-7.
In age singles matches, Peter Lai, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Preston Antonini, will play in the final against Byron Hardy, a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Jose Gallego in the Men’s 45+ division.
Khay Sung earned win No. 1 against Joseph Cruz, 7-6(3), 6-1 in Men’s 35+ round robin action.
In the Women’s 35+ division, Lydia Tan earned a win when opponent Diane Lee retired, trailing 2-6, 6-2, 3-1 to go 1-0 in round robin play.
