Guam – It’s always a great indication of sheer competitiveness when first round tennis action – including matches against seeded players – goes three sets.
No. 2 seeded Joseph Cruz prevented an early upset by outlasting Sam Lai, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to stay alive in the Men’s Open singles in the 2012 Quality Cup tennis tournament FRIDAY at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa tennis courts.
The southpaw will next face either Kenta Tanimoto or Joshua Cepeda in the next round. Tanimoto and Cepeda will face off SATURDAY at 9:30 a.m. at the Hilton.
In Tanimoto’s match FRIDAY, he prevailed over Tae Heon Kim, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the Men’s 4.5 singles and will next face No. 3 David Lai, also SATURDAY following his Open singles match.
In other Men’s 4.5 singles matches, Swami defeated Saipan’s Chuck Sayon, 6-4, 6-1 and Alexander Ornbo needed a third set tiebreaker to dispatch Masakazu Takahashi, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(3).
Landon Nadler and Robert Mendi advance in the draw by default over George Lai and brother Peter Lai, respectively. Mendi next faces highly decorated junior player and No. 1 seed Emil-Christian Penafiel at 11 a.m. SATURDAY at Hilton.
Scores from other matches were not available as of press time. Quality Cup action continues SATURDAY at the Hilton, Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort tennis courts and the Rick Ninete Tennis Center. Women’s skill singles begins SATURDAY.
