Guam – A familiar rivalry in Quality Distributors and Guam Shipyard is on deck for the finals of the Beck’s 5th Annual GFA Cup at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon.
The final will be played Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and will include reserved seating on the second-floor lanai for VIPs, including the GFA Executive Committee and proud supporters from the tournament’s sponsor, Ambros.
Quality Distributors FC has earned its ticket to the finals of the GFA Cup for the fifth year in a row and has won four titles. The only other team to ever win the GFA Cup is coincidentally Guam Shipyard, who in 2010 snuck past Quality 4-3 behind a hat trick from Jason Cunliffe and an additional goal from Elias Merfalen.
Quality, the top team from Division I of the Budweiser Men’s Soccer League, defeated a shorthanded Cars Plus FC team, 6-0, on April 29 for a berth in the finals. Scott Spindel scored a hat trick in the contest and Matthew Cruz, Jimmy Bush and Bryce Peagram scored the team’s other goals.
In the other semifinal also played on April 29, Guam Shipyard, the second-ranked team in the Budweiser Men’s Soccer League, blanked Fuji Ichiban Espada FC 2-0 behind late back-to-back goals from Gerard Perez and Camden Aguon. Perez scored the game’s first goal in the 77th minute and Aguon added a goal in the 82nd minute.
A consolation game between Cars Plus FC and Fuji Ichiban will be played at 5:30 p.m. prior to the tournament’s final match.
An awards ceremony and a fiesta-style banquet will be held after the final match to officially conclude the season-ending GFA Cup tournament.
