Red Ribbon Campaign encourages families to talk about drugs

The next Red Ribbon Campaign event is a Community Outreach at the Micronesia Mall Center Court on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Guam – Although National Red Ribbon Week is from Oct. 23 to 31, Guam’s Red Ribbon Coalition has scheduled various activities throughout the month to promote this year’s theme, “YOLO (You Only Live Once), BE DRUG FREE.”

The Red Ribbon Campaign kicked off with a Proclamation Signing by Gov. Eddie Calvo on Oct. 3 at Simon Sanchez High School.

Last Friday, Sen. Frank Aguon Jr. presented a resolution at Untalan Middle School, the winners of the 2015 Video Contest. Upcoming events include a Community Outreach at the Micronesia Mall, a Red Ribbon Wave in front of Chief Kepuha loop, and a Halloween event at the Agana Shopping Center. A number of guests spoke to students about the importance of talking about drugs with their families, including U.S. Atty. Alicia Limtiaco.

“Here in Guam, I think many of our community members know that we do have a drug problem here, and the principal drug of choice being ice,” Limtiaco stated. “We shared a statistic that children of parents who talk about drugs on a regular basis are 42 percent less likely to use drugs as they get older, compared to those who never discuss drugs. And these reports have also indicated that, despite the statistics, only 25 percent of young people say that their families bring up the issue of drugs. So we’ve encouraged and invited our students in our outreaches to go home and to bring up the subject.”

The public is invited to attend the upcoming Red Ribbon Campaign events.
