Guam – The swimmer who was reported in distress off of Lost Pond or Tanguisson Beach Sunday afternoon has passed away.

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola confirmed the identity of the 49 year old woman as Melissa Murphy.

On Sunday, GFD, the US Coast Guard and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 all participated in the search and rescue, which lasted about an hour and a half. Espinola says the victim died from asphyxia due to drowning.

This marks the island’s second water related death of the year.

The US National Weather Service Guam has issued a high surf advisory over the next couple of days and urges residents to stay away from the dangerous surf, especially along the North facing reefs.
