Guam – Majority Leader Senator Rory Respicio filed his paper work for re-election to the Guam Legislature Thursday afternoon, becoming the first candidate to file for the 2014 election.
The Senator says in a release that he chose to file today because it is National Law Day, whose theme this year is “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.”
The release quotes the Senator as saying “I remain active, and committed to my work as your senator. I am very proud of my record of accomplishments, and grateful to be in a position to Stand Up for those who have been mistreated by the very government which is supposed to serve and protect them! I humbly ask for the continued support of our community, and reach out daily to ask people to vote for me.”
Respicio was joined at the election commission by his wife Joleen, their son RJ and other family members and friends.

Respicio Files Candidacy for Senator
Senator Rory J. Respicio (D) today filed his senatorial candidate paperwork with the Guam Election Commission.
According to the Guam Election Commission, Respicio is the first candidate to officially file their paperwork for the senatorial race.
Respicio said he chose today to file in honor of National Law Day, which is celebrating the right of citizens to vote. This year’s theme is “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.”
“As we have seen in past elections on Guam and throughout our Nation, every vote counts,” Respicio said. “As a Senator, I have worked diligently to pass laws that mandate election reform on Guam and now the election commission can finally provide for free and fair elections here on our island.”
Respicio was joined at the election commission this afternoon by his wife Joleen, their son RJ and many other family and friends.

In the present term, Respicio remains focused on the timely payments of tax refunds and putting an end to the current practice of using refund reserves for government operations; providing for a more open and transparent government; election reform; the promotion of a one-Guam approach to the federal government and the military buildup through the Guam First Commission; the full implementation of the Compacts of Free Association by repatriating those who break our laws, and by obtaining full reimbursement for Compact Impact; support for agriculture and aquaculture on Guam and throughout Micronesia; and standing up for the dignity of our manamko and rights of our families and working people.
Respicio currently serves as the Majority Leader and Chairperson of the Committee on Rules; Federal, Foreign & Micronesian Affairs; Human & Natural Resources, and Election Reform in the 32nd Guam Legislature. Respicio has served in the 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st and 32nd Guam Legislatures and has had a number of his bills become law, including the establishment of the Office of Finance and Budget and the creation of the Guam First Commission which brings all the various interests in Guam together to speak with one voice concerning the federal territorial issues, including the military buildup. Respicio earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Government & Politics with a minor in English/Business & Management from University of Maryland University College.
