Results from the Budweiser Men’s Soccer League

Guam – Following its 9-2 win over Fuji Ichiban Espada FC yesterday, Guam Shipyard took first place in Division I of the Budweiser Men’s Soccer League at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon – for a mere two hours.

In the late game, Quality Distributors stamped its authority as top team of the league following a 9-2 victory over the fourth-place Cars Plus FC team in the season’s last weekend of play. Quality’s win secured the team’s place at No. 1, while Shipyard dropped back down to No. 2. Fuji Ichiban stayed at No. 3 with the team’s loss.

It wasn’t until the 80th minute of play that Cars Plus FC – playing one-man-down – was able to find the back of the net against a full Quality team. Cars Plus FC’s Ian Mariano used his speed to break through the Quality defense for a one-on-one shot against Quality goalkeeper Ryan Gordon from the center. Prior to the play, however, Quality had already amassed a 7-0 lead with a hat trick from Matt Cruz, two goals from Scott Spindel, and a goal each from Jordan Gregory and Irving Mercado. Cars Plus FC’s Shawn Spindel, Scott’s brother, scored his team’s other goal on a breakaway six minutes after Mariano.

With only a few minutes left to play, the Quality team was openly trying to feed the ball to Scott Spindel, who needed five goals in the game to claim the Golden Boot award for most goals scored in the season. Spindel ended up finishing with four goals to settle for a tie with Shipyard’s Jason Cunliffe at 32 for the season for the joint Golden Boot distinction.

Cunliffe had previously eclipsed Spindel last weekend following his seven-goal game against the Paintco Strykers. In yesterday’s game against Fuji Ichiban, Cunliffe led his team with a hat trick, while teammates Anthony Babauta and Donald Weakley each scored twice. Ajay Pothen and Aaron Jackson scored Shipyard’s other goals. Natsuki Recella and David John Cruz were credited for scoring Fuji Ichiban’s goals.

In the battle between the fifth and sixth place teams, Guahan ICRC forged a comeback from a 1-2 deficit in the first half to prevail over the Paintco Strykers 3-2. Guahan’s Cheyne Robles scored the equalizer in the 66th minute, and Dustin Alger scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. Richard Ubaldo scored Guahan’s other goal. Kevin Knaeble and Hiro Asoshina scored for the Strykers within one minute of each other in the first half.

The Budweiser Men’s Soccer League officially concludes on Thursday with the league’s final Division III matches, beginning at 7 p.m. at the GFA facility.
