Guam – Guahan Napu Inc., the local non-profit federation of surfers and body-boarders, and co-sponsors GTA TeleGuam and Bud Light, today confirmed that the fifth annual Rick’s Reef Classic surfing competition will proceed on March 31.
The surf federation has had to delay the event three times since Feb. 18 because of poor wave conditions.
“The forecast is for three-foot high sets which will be ideal for the men’s longboard surfing, women’s body-boarding and juniors’ surfing competitions.
The men’s surfing and men’s body-board contestants will have to work a bit harder on such wave conditions,” said Willi Byerly, president, Guahan Napu Inc. “We’ve been on tenterhooks for this contest as Guam’s surf season is nearing the end with the onset of spring in north Asia.
We’re grateful to our two major sponsors and the Sheraton, the Guam Fire Department and the Guam Police marine division for their patience when we had to hold over the competition three times in the past two months.”
In addition to GTA TeleGuam, Bud Light, and the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort, other sponsors for the fifth Rick’s Reef Classic competition are major surf brand businesses DaKine, Primo Surf Shop, Lotus Surf, Fokai Industries, GoPro, Black Fly and DNA Evolution. Other supporters include PROA Restaurant and Foremost Water.
The judging clinic for the competition will be held Wednesday, March 28, 7:00 p.m. Registration for the contest is on Friday, March 30, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Surfers’ Point poolside bar at the Sheraton. No registration will be accepted on contest day. Show time on Saturday is 6:00 a.m.; go time for the first heat is 7:00 a.m.
