Guam – Guahan Napu Inc., the local non-profit association of surfers and body-boarders, today announced that the fourth annual “Rick’s Reef Classic” surfing and body-boarding competition will be held Jan. 29 at Satpon Point. The contest is being presented by main sponsor, GTA TeleGuam, for the fourth consecutive year. The Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort is once again the host venue.
The Rick’s Reef Classic IV competition is the second in a series of qualifying tryout events organized by Guahan Napu Inc. for surfers and long board surfers who want to be considered by the Guam National Olympic Committee for Team Guam going to the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia. Scores from Surf The Basin II November 2010 competition are aggregated with Rick’s Reef Classic IV event. Following the Rick’s Reef IV contest, the top 10 point scorers from men’s surfing and five top point scorers from men’s long board surfing will then move forward to compete in the Pacific Games I and II qualifying events between February and March.
The Jan. 29 competition will feature the following categories:
Men’s open surfing
Men’s long board surfing
Juniors’ open surfing
Men’s open body boarding
Interested participants of the 2011 Rick’s Reef Classic IV event are requested to attend a general membership meeting of the association on Thursday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m. at the Fishermen’s Co-op in Hagatna for a contest briefing.
The association is also seeking volunteers to judge the competition. A judging clinic will be conducted by the surf association on Jan. 25 prior to the contest. Interested volunteers should contact Ken Concepcion, vice president, Guahan Napu Inc. and head judge of Rick’s Reef Classic IV at 689-2673.
Pre-registration for the contest will open on Friday, Jan. 28 between 5:30 and 8 p.m. at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort poolside bar “Surfers’ Point”. Contest fee is $20 per category. Sign ups will not be accepted on the event day. Show time for all competitors is 6:30 a.m.; go time is 7 am.

In addition to GTA TeleGuam, Byerly said Bud Light and the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort are the other major supporters. Dickerson and Quinn, distributor of Hormel products, is donating a SPAM branded surf board to be raffled at the event. Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets will go toward the association’s fund raising for the Pacific Games.
