(Barrigada, Guam –– Wednesday, March 15, 2012) Guahan Napu Inc., the local non-profit federation of surfers and body-boarders, and co-sponsors GTA TeleGuam and Bud Light, today announce a third holding period of the fifth annual Rick’s Reef Classic surfing competition to March 31. A forecast of inclement weather with high, gusty winds, heavy rain and low surf has forced the organizer to once again re-schedule the competition, which was to have been held this Saturday, March 17.
The federation has had holding periods for past Rick’s Reef Classic contests in 2009 and 2010; however this year’s event has been held over longer due to a lack of good surf conditions. Willi Byerly, president of Guahan Napu Inc. said the ideal wave sizes should be between four and six feet. The rescheduled event dates are pegged on fortnightly changes of tidal conditions.
In addition to GTA TeleGuam, Bud Light, and the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort, other sponsors for the fifth Rick’s Reef Classic competition are major surf brand businesses Da Kine, Primo Surf Shop, Lotus Surf, Fokai Industries, GoPro, Black Fly and DNA Evolution. Other supporters include PROA Restaurant and Foremost Water.
In the meantime, Guahan Napu also announced that the federation has been invited by the International Surfing Association, based out of La Jolla, Calif to join the international surfing body. “Membership in the ISA will in the long run allow us to participate in international surfing events organized by member nations,” said Byerly.
