Guam – It was Emma Naval’s unexpected goal in the second half that lifted the Sidekicks 1-0 over Quality Distributors in the Under-10 division of the Cars Plus Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon Saturday.
“I was really surprised – I didn’t think it was going to in,” said Naval, a McCool Elementary School student, after the match. “I thought someone would kick it away, as I didn’t really kick it powerfully. The goalie barely missed it.”
Naval had a chance to add an insurance goal on a penalty kick, but Quality Distributors’ Robert Nui was able to block the shot, as it deflected off his body as he leaped.
Nui and his Quality teammates continued to pressure the Sidekicks for the equalizer late in the match. Nui beat two defenders to the goal, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Minutes later, Nui’s next shot hit the goal post, allowing the Sidekicks to survive on a single goal in the final minutes of the second half.
“After playing this match, I think we’re going to need to work on not bunching up so much on the field, and also to continue to practice good sportsmanship,” Naval said.
