Guam – Senator Rory Respicio has sent a letter to Governor Eddie Calvo asking him to step forward in support of his nominee, John Salas, to the position of Chief of the Guam Fire Department, or select another candidate.
In the letter, Respicio questioned whether or not the administration supports Salas, who has been serving as Acting GFD Chief since January.
During the first day of Session this past Tuesday, lawmakers sent Salas’ nomination back to Committee, effectively killing it.
Senator Respicio told PNC News today [Friday]: “In this case the Governor is already, according to John Salas, saying he [Salas] can’t come to the legislature and talk to Senators. So even though you have some firefighters wanting him as Fire Chief, what’s important to me is how the appointing authority feels about that nominee.”
Firefghters demonstrated Thrusday calling on Lamakers to reconsider Salas’ nomination.
In response to that demonstration, Respicio in his letter writes: “They say they are confident that Chief Salas would make an excellent leader for the department and that the Chief has not been treated fairly.” Then asking the Governor, “But how can there be any expectation of confirmation if you have prohibited your own nominee from speaking to individual senators, or from answering their questions, or from providing additional information?”
Respicio also says the appropriate person to defend Salas should be Lt. Governor Tenorio, because he has been named by the Governor as the Public Safety czar.
