Saipan – CNMI Governor Benigno Fitial says he intends to ask the Department of Homeland Security to start deporting almost 2,000 unemployed foreign workers from the Commonwealth. Fitial says he’ll make the request when he visits Washington, D.C. for official business later this month.
The Governor said he will make the request during his meetings with the heads of DHS’ U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on Feb. 23, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Feb. 24.
Fitial said the 2,000 unemployed former nonresident workers would have been deportable under local immigration laws. He said DHS already was given the names of these unemployed foreign workers, but the latter hasn’t done anything about it.
The governor said that it is this lack of effective DHS enforcement, including failing to deport illegal aliens unless they have committed a crime, that prompted the enactment of the Arizona law that is now being challenged by the federal government.
Fitial previously mentioned the almost 2,000 “illegal aliens” in his State of the Commonwealth Report to the Legislature on Dec. 30 last year.
