Sailor attached to visiting ship dies after incident at Naval Base Guam

A Sailor attached to a U.S. Navy ship on a scheduled visit to Guam died Thursday.

Lieutenant Commander Rick Moore with Joint Region Marianas, said, “at approximately 2:08 p.m. ChST a Sailor assigned to USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) was pronounced deceased at U.S. Naval Hospital Guam.”

The incident that lead to the Sailor’s death is said to have happened at Gab Gab Beach on the Naval Base.

The cause of death has not yet been released and Moore said it’s still under investigation.

The Rafael Peralta is moored in Guam for a scheduled visit, according to Moore.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until 24 hours following next-of-kin notification.

The USS Rafael Peralta is a San Diego based guided-missile destroyer. Guam has been deemed a Safe Haven Liberty Port for incoming U.S. Navy ships, in the face of COVID-19.
