San Nicolas: $5M cut to GFD won’t cause furloughs

Guam – It’s status quo for the Guam Fire Department next fiscal year, says Acting Fire Chief Joey San Nicolas.

On Newstalk K57’s Mornings with Patti today, San Nicolas discussed what the $5 million dollar cut to his department in FY19 would mean. Apparently, it’s operations as per usual.

San Nicolas says the budget slash will not affect emergency services, nor will it prompt furloughs or affect the most important assets. He also says GFD will not have to take the same drastic measures as they did earlier this year when mandatory cuts forced the closure of two of their firestations. According to the fire chief, lawmakers further managed to spare the cutting of recruits and new hires, but that the agency will scale down where they can to save funding.

One casualty, however, will be the inability to purchase new ambulances this year.
