Guam – Authorities are warning Guam residents not to answer phone calls from a foreign number beginning with +881 as it appears to be a scam.

Dozens of residents have been reporting receiving phone calls from the number +8818215501200 this morning. The caller, however, hangs up after one or two rings before anyone can answer the call.

Guam Homeland Security issued a release saying this phone number is part of a known scam called “Wangiri” or in Japanese “one ring and one drop.” The international call then prompts people to return the phone call which will then charge premium rates to the customer automatically.

GHS says the Marianas Regional Fusion Center is closely monitoring the scam and warns residents not to answer the phone call and more importantly, do not call the number back.
