Seafarers from Lamotrek, Yap Present Pandanus Sail to UOG

The sail will now be on display at UOG.

Guam – Traditional navigators from Yap held a special ceremony to present their woven pandanus sail to the University of Guam.

Because UOG President Dr. Robert Underwood sailed in one of the canoes as a guest of the Lamotrek delegation in the welcoming ceremony held early Sunday morning, the navigators, seafarers and weavers from Lamotrek, Yap decided to gift their sail to the college. During the ceremony, Underwood said it was an honor to participate in the ceremony and observe the skill of these traditional navigators and he’s proud to display the sail as a symbol of the connection and shared history as people of the islands.

Translating for Chief of Lamotrek Pete Ubemal says, “On behalf of the people of Lamotrek, we thank the community members, to our lead navigator and the crew for the delivering this sail today. On that note, he wish to thank all of you very much. He’s very grateful for your generosity and hospitality to us since our arrival.”
The sail will now be on display at the Jesus and Eugenia School of Business and Public Administration Building until August.
