Secretary of Defense calls Governor; thanks Guam for helping Navy

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero said she received an unexpected call Wednesday morning from U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

She said Esper called to thank her and the people of Guam for the assistance and cooperation the island has provided to the Navy and the sailors from the USS Roosevelt who are fighting the outbreak of COVID-19.

“He wanted to let us know that our help and assistance is very well appreciated and very well noted, not just here in Guam but also in Hawaii with Indo-PacCom and especially in Washington D.C. and especially at the Pentagon. He wanted to personally offer his thank you,” the governor said.

The military is in the process of setting up two field hospitals at the Naval Communications Station in Finegayan to care for the more than 500 Roosevelt sailors who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The governor said that Esper also confirmed that those facilities and the doctors and nursing staff that go with them will be available to GovGuam if more bed space is needed to care for island residents who’ve contracted the disease as well.
