Guam – Next Monday, August 23, and Tuesday August 24, Senator Tom Ada will be holding infromational briefings at the legislative hearing room on the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS).
The briefings will be held from 6 to 8 pm.
Senator Ada is the Chairperson of the Legislature’s Committee on Utilities, Transportation, Public Works and Veterans Affairs.
In a release, the Senator says that the briefing will provide various government agencies (Port Authority of Guam, Guam Power Authority, Guam Waterworks Authority, and Department of Public Works) under the oversight of the Committee an opportunity to present information and comments pertinent to their organization’s concerns vis-a-vis the Final Environmental Impact Statement. In other words, does the Final EIS satisfactorily address the comments and concerns raised during the review of the Draft EIS. Senator Ada states, “It is critical that we become aware of any concerns these agencies may have regarding the buildup in order to determine how we should respond to the Final EIS.”
The following agencies will provide a 30-45 minute presentation: Consolidated Commission on Utilities (Guam Waterworks Authority and Guam Power Authority), Port Authority of Guam, and the Department of Public Works.
The FEIS is the second to the last step required by the National Environmental Protection Act in the implementation of the military’s planned relocation of 8,000 marines and their families to Guam. NEPA requires federal agencies to integrate environmental values into their decision-making processes by considering the environmental impacts of their proposed actions and reasonable alternatives to those actions.
