A 25-year-old man is dead after his Toyota Highlander struck a concrete power pole early this morning near the intersection of Wusstig Road and Marine Corps Drive.

Guam Fire Department spokesman Kevin Reilly reported that GFD medics were called to the scene about 10 minutes after midnight.

The man was taken to Guam Regional Medical City hospital. CPR was conducted en-route. He was later pronounced dead by the attending physician.

The victim’s identity has not been released. The father of the man was at the scene this morning but declined to comment.

Sgt. Paul Tapao, Guam Police Department spokesman, said the Highlander was traveling south on Route 1 when it veered off the road and ran into the power pole.

“Our traffic investigators have yet to determine whether speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors to this crash. Upon completion of the autopsy and all the other findings, we can move forward and hopefully provide closure to this case,” Tapao said.

This was the 16th traffic-related fatality of the year on Guam.
