Guam – Dr. Shieh’s Clinic is now accepting nominations for this year’s Shieh Su Ying Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year 2011. Application may be downloaded on www.guamsportsweb.com.

Celebrating 10 years of the Scholar Athletes of the Year Program will be the arrival of University of Hawaii Head Coach Dave Shoji along with former Wahine Ashley Watanabe as keynote speaker. Coach Shoji is a NCAA Legend in NCAA Women’s Volleyball World.

Some of Shoji’s accomplishments include: AVCA National Coach of the Year (1982 and 2009); Over 1,045 match victories—second-highest in NCAA history; Career winning percentage of .849—second-highest in NCAA history; 4 NCAA National Championship Titles (1979, 1982, 1983, 1987); 9 trips to the Final Four; 30 NCAA Tournament appearances; 16 consecutive Western Athletic Conference (WAC) titles; 11-time WAC Coach of the Year; Coached 24 AVCA All-Americans (including 2008 Olympic silver-medalists Robyn Ah Mow-Santos and Heather Bown); Named Coach of the NCAA Division-1 25th Anniversary Women’s Volleyball Team in 2005; Named to USA Volleyball’s All-Time Great Coaches list (2002); Has the most
popular college volleyball program in the country, with more than 10,000 fans in attendance at some games: the only revenue-producing college volleyball program in America; Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame Inductee and AVCA Hall of Fame.

All past years’ scholar athlete finalists are welcome to attend the awards banquet on SUNDAY, June 5th, 6 PM, Hyatt Regency Guam where this year’s Male and Female Scholar Athletes 2011 will be announced. RSVP should be given to Dr. Shieh at doctorsshieh@yahoo.com.

This year, 10 finalists will each receive an iPad 2, and the male and female winners will each receive a $2,000 scholarship and a special Trophy created by Tiffany & Co., the makers of world famous trophies such as the Super Bowl. The trophies will be displayed at Tiffany & Co. in Tumon 10 days prior to the awards banquet. All graduating seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.4 and played a varsity sport are encouraged to submit their nomination. Nominees should display good citizenship and be free of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

On MONDAY, June 6th, 9 AM – 6 PM, Dale Jenkins’ Gym – Coach Shoji will conduct a free volleyball clinic for students age 11 – 18 yrs old, or students in grade levels 6th – 12th. More information will be posted on www.guamsportsweb.com this week. The Shieh Su Ying Scholar Athletes’ Award Program is directly sponsored by Dr. Shieh’s Clinic.
