Guam – Senator Mana Silva-Taijeron has sent a letter to Governor Eddie Calvo proposing an alternative to cutting pay and benefits to Guam Firefighters.
She is suggesting GovGuam use the savings from the recently awarded Telecommunications contract which was given to a bidder who promised to provide telcom services for $1.6 million dollars less than what GovGuam currently pays.
That award is currently under protest, but the Senator expresses confidence that it will be resolved.
A release quotes Silva-Taijeron as saying her proposal “provides the government an opportunity to continue to pay for our firefighters’ hard earned benefits.”

Silva Taijeron Proposes Spending Cuts Alternative
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 21, 2012
Senator Mana Silva Taijeron sent a letter to Governor Eddie Calvo informing him of her intent to amend both the budget bill and any proposed omnibus spending cuts bill in order to replace the cut to firefighters’ work hours and incentive pay with savings from the government’s recent telecommunications bid. Telecommunications services were bid out for the first time and the winning company offered to provide the services to the government of Guam at $1.6 million less than it is currently paying.
“I commend Governor Calvo for putting out a competitive bid for telecommunications services for the first time in the history of the government of Guam,” said Sen. Silva Taijeron. “I am confident that the protest to this bid will be resolved, and the significant decrease in cost associated with this new contract rightfully should go to help pay taxpayer refunds. I am equally appreciative that this provides the government an opportunity to continue to pay for our firefighters’ hard earned benefits.”
Sen. Silva Taijeron will make an amendment to the budget bill appropriating the prospective decrease cost from the telecommunications contract to tax refunds. She will then pursue an amendment to any spending cuts bill to remove the cuts to firefighters’ work hours and incentive pay.
