Silva-Taijeron Bill Would Ban All Passengers From Pickup Beds

Guam – Senator Mana Silva Taijeron has introduced a measure that would ban all passengers from riding in the bed of a pickup truck.

Bill 60-31 would stiffen penalties for violators by imposing a $100 fine per passenger riding in the bed of a truck.

Read Bill 60

Current law allows for 5 passengers in the bed of a pickup, all of them must be over the age of 12.

In a release the Senator is quoted as saying that “This has been a very dangerous practice and recent tragic events have made it all the more evident. Pick up truck beds were designed to transport cargo, and people are not cargo.”

Senator Silva-Taijeron points out that the practice of allowing people to ride in the bed of a pickup has resulted in serious injuries.  “Most recently, several teenagers were critically injured after being thrown from the back of a pick up truck.”

If passed, the bill will become effective within 30 days of its passage.
