Southern Dolphins Face Off Against Notre Dame Royals FRIDAY in IIAAG Girls Soccer

Guam – It will be a battle of the league’s southern teams on Friday as the Southern High School Dolphins are set to play Notre Dame High School Royals in the final of the IIAAG Girls High School Soccer League playoffs at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon.

In the early semifinal game, Southern High managed a 2-1 win over defending champion Guam High School to advance to the final.

The league’s All-Island MVP Paige Surber had a stellar outing, scoring both goals for Southern, including a successful penalty kick that sealed her team’s victory. Surber earned the chance at the penalty kick when her teammate was fouled in the box in the 68th minute.

“I just thought to myself, ‘relax, just get the ball in,’” Surber said, recalling her thoughts as she went for her penalty kick shot. “It was great to score on the penalty kick, but it really was a team effort. Without my teammates’ efforts to run the ball up toward the goal, I would have never gotten the penalty kick opportunity.”

Surber’s other goal, a shot from the right side that had just enough power to find the back of the net on the far post, put her team up 1-0 by halftime.

Guam High’s Quincy Tougher scored her team’s lone goal in the 46th minute after putting in a shot near the goal following a corner kick play. The game was locked at 1-1 for more than 20 minutes before the Dolphins found their opportunity on the penalty kick.

Notre Dame set up a finals date with Southern High after shutting out the George Washington High School Geckos 2-1 in the day’s other semifinal game.

ND’s Jeena Naputi broke the scoring ice in the 29th minute, easily kicking her shot in an undefended goal. GW keeper, Jena Cruz, had run out near the penalty box to kick away an ND forward pass. Cruz lost the ball on the gutsy play, allowing Naputi to pass her.

Later, in the 75th minute, ND’s Demi-Rae Shimizu added an insurance goal with her right-side blast. Cruz got her hand on the ball, but the ball bounced on the goal post and found the back of the net for the score.

The consolation match between Guam High and GW will be played at 4:30 p.m. followed by the final game between ND and Southern at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the GFA facility in Harmon.
