Fernando Scaliem, the Speaker of the Pohnpei State Legislature, has died.
Speaker Scaliem was the current President of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures (APIL). He is the longest serving APIL member who holds a leadership position, having served seven terms as an officer of APIL.
Speaker Tina Rose Muña Barnes is mourning the passing of her colleague and fellow advocate of the Blue Continent.
She said Scaliem was a longtime friend, who always wanted to work together to improve the Pacific Region as a whole.
Speaker Barnes added that Scaliem’s passing is a sad day not only for Pohnpei, but also for the entire Pacific Region.
Scaliem was involved in a variety of issues pertaining to education, sustainability, climate change, regional healthcare, regional transportation within the Blue Continent, and stronger collaboration between APIL member states.
Speaker Barnes said Scaliem’s drive and vision were responsible for many of the successes in our region.
Speaker Barnes concluded: “To your family, colleagues, the People of Pohnpei and the Federated States of Micronesia, I would like to extend my deepest condolences on behalf of my family and the 35th Guam Legislature.”
