Guam – The Guam Education Policy Board was supposed to meet with Department of Education Superintendent Dr. Nerissa Underwood Wednesday night, but the meeting was postponed until next Tuesday because its was scheduled without the advance 5 day notice required.
Board Chairman Ron Ayuyu says they’re suppose to provide five working days to inform the public about a meeting, but when they set the meeting last Thursday night, they overlooked the Thanksgiving Holiday. So only 4 days had past.
This is a Special meeting that is being continued from last Thursday’s meeting which was called to consider disciplinary action against Superintendent Underwood. Disciplinary action is under consideration in the wake of last week’s bruising legislative oversight hearing on bullying and sexual harassment in the schools.
Last week, Ayuyu said that Underwood has been given some time to prepare her response to the concerns that the GEPB raised at last Thursday’s meeting with the Superintendent.
Ayuyu told PNC News “we want to know whats really happening and assuring that they take care of these people and that this doesn’t happen. Accountability, health and safety is very important, that’s what I always say in my interviews and we take it very seriously with the board and also addressing this to the superintendent and down to the management.”
Ayuyu preferred not to comment on how either Underwood or DOE’s administration have been handling the bullying situation inside the public schools.
He wants to keep this personal until the board members meet with Underwood and they address all the issues next Tuesdays at 6pm in the doe conference room.
