Guam – St. John’s School eighth grader Nicholas Camacho earned 1st Place in the Biodiversity category with his research and presentation on “Allelopathic inhibition of Vitex Parvilfor” at the Shizuoka Kita Youth Science Engineering Forum (SKYSEF) in Shizuoka, Japan. SKYSEF forum winners were announced on August 06, 2013 at Shizuoka Japan.

Over 180 students and 107 teachers from approximately 30 schools representing nine countries participated in SKYSEF 2013.  The goal of SKYSEF is to help junior and senior high school students discuss a sustainable society and environment in the 21st century.  Students from around the world discuss their research regarding, energy, environment, and biodiversity and what actions may be taken to sustain them.

The following students are also acknowledged by St. John’s School for their participation: Brandon Yu (8th grade) and Davin Yang (8th grade) jointly presented “A comparative evaluation between plow based and no-till farming: Retaining soil moisture and preventing surface runoff.”

Ms. Shayna Afaisen, Science Teacher, St. John’s School, was each student’s adviser.

One of the ways in which St. John’s School supplements its core curriculum and school-wide learning outcomes is by supporting students in local, national, and international competitions and exhibits.
