As part of 340th Jubilee Anniversary festivities, the faithful community of St. Joseph Church is pleased to invite the island to the Second Memorial Floating Lantern Festival taking place after the commemoration of All Souls’ Day on November 2, 2021, at the Inalåhan Pool.

The festival will take place after the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Joseph Church on Tuesday, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Participants are required to adhere to COVID-19 safety measures: washing and sanitizing their hands, observing 6-foot social distance and wearing a mask at all times. Those with flu-like symptoms are asked to stay home and seek medical attention.

“All Souls’ Day reminds us that our relationships with our departed loved ones never end, even when they die,” said Father Joseph Anore, pastor of St. Joseph Church. “Their death deepens our love and intimacy through continued prayers for them. The occasion also reminds us of our own mortality and the pilgrimage we are making to our eternal home.”

In support of the parish, participants are encouraged to purchase lanterns from the Parish Office. The lanterns are $20 each and available at the Parish Office during the following office hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Purchases may also be made after Mass this weekend at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Lanterns may be personalized and decorated in the spirit of departed loved ones.

“The Memorial Floating Lantern Festival is an act of love and reverence for our deceased loved ones,” Anore said. “The proceeds will be used to replace the air conditioning units in our church. By giving support to this very noble act, we also build our faith as a community, because each person has the opportunity to share their resources for the common good.”

Participants are asked to observe their lanterns and, upon conclusion of the festival, collect them before leaving. Unclaimed lanterns will be collected by the Inalåhan Mayor’s Office.

St. Joseph Church continues celebrating its 340th Jubilee Anniversary. Festivities launched in March 2020, however, in light of pandemic restrictions have been extended.

The festival will be live-streamed via the St. Joseph Church Guam Facebook page. For more information, please contact the Parish Office at 671-828-8102 or sanjosejubilee@gmail.com.
