Stars and Stripes: U.S. and Japan Agree to Move Some Fighter Jet Training to Guam From Okinawa

Guam – Stars & Stripes is reporting that the United States and Japan agreed on Thursday to move some Okinawa-based F-15 fighters to Guam for training.

The move had been telegraphed by Japanese media last month, but the paper reports that Japan’s Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa made it official Thursday when he notified Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima of the decision during his visit to the island Thursday.

According to the report, Kitizawa told reporters that the F-15 training is expected to be moved to Guam sometime after April and Japan will cover the cost of relocating the F-15 drills.

During their 20 minute meeting at the Okinawa Governor’s office in Naha, Kitazawa told Governor Nakaima that moving the training is part of Japan’s efforts to “reduce the burden of Okinawa” of hosting U.S. bases.
